You guys, I’m PISSED. I’m so angry about the shooting in D.C. today. A friend in D.C. whose husband serves in the Navy was tweeting this morning, and by the time I woke up on the west coast I was pouring over her feed trying to make sure her husband was okay, and reading everything I could find on HuffPost trying to figure out what was happening.
And I stepped on my soapbox for a few tweets, then I was afraid I might get stuck up there, so I hopped off and decided to use this space instead.
This is a HUGE problem. To everyone who says we just need MORE GUNS to combat the gun problem: WHAT ABOUT ALL OF THE GUNS ON THE MILITARY BASE THIS MORNING? What about all of the servicemen who are trained to use arms? What about the police who had guns? What about the security measures the shooter had to have passed to get through? OBVIOUSLY WE NEED MORE GUNS, RIGHT?
WRONG. Holy crap.
The second amendment is NOT about allowing anyone who wants one the ability to get an assault weapon. And gun control is not about taking away guns from responsible owners or hunters or anyone who is trained to use them and has the ability to get them responsibly. It’s about CONTROLLING the flow of guns, not removing them completely. It’s about making sure that the people who get them are not convicted felons or mentally ill persons or however else things can be controlled for RESPONSIBILITY, not for limitation for those asserting their rights.
Look. I’m from Oklahoma. I have family members with guns. I have an uncle with a room full of animal heads! He travels the world with his giant guns to bring down big game so he can stuff them and display them in his house. Good for him! He’s also not using those big guns against children or other innocents. I have a brother-in-law who has been hunting since he was a kid and got a shotgun from his friends when he got married. Hooray for him! Delicious duck! I’m NOT anti-gun, by any means. And I’m not trying to take away your rights AT ALL. I’m trying to figure out why the common second amendment stance is MORE GUNS, when obviously this isn’t working.
There were more guns in that naval yard than the shooter had. And that didn’t stop the problem this morning. That didn’t stop the fatalities, or the injuries. So don’t tell me putting an armed guard at my daughter’s school will stop a potential shooter from coming to harm her. And don’t tell me controlling the flow of guns and accounting for the weapons that are out there is not needed. Don’t tell me that.
These jerks got onto a freaking military base with assault weapons and killed people. How much more needs to happen? I don’t want to infringe on your freaking rights. I want to keep as many people safe as possible.
I can’t even leave you with a picture today. I’m just seething.
