» Purging

I’ve been attempting to purge all of the extra STUFF in our house. I’m sick of feeling like every cabinet and closet is full of stuff we don’t use.

I posted some stuff on Facebook and Craigslist, and am hoping to sell a bunch of stuff. My dad gave us his old bed frame (headboard/footboard/side planks) and armoire, so our old (basic, metal) bed frame has been sold (provided the CL guy picks it up tomorrow afternoon as planned), and then I’ll probably sell (sorry, Mom, just makes sense) our antique Japanese dresser. We have two Japanese dressers, but one is on its last leg or would need a lot of repairs, and part of it is in our room, and part of it is in the play/guest room, and we’ll probably keep that one so that we can use it for toys.

I posted and am trying to sell the guest room bed, which I’ll replace (at some point… probably right before we have guests again) with a futon or pullout couch to save space. Apparently for now when Eriana gets bigger so do her toys. I’m hoping to sell a chair we’ve been storing for someone for a couple of years, and give him the money from it to buy a new one or just buy him a new one and have it sent directly, instead of storing one that we’ll never send and he’ll never pick up. I pulled out some purses and shoes that I never use/wear but are still in good condition, and I’m hoping to sell Eriana’s old clothes and maybe her high chair (to get a booster-type chair) at a consignment sale in October. I’ll also (sadly) clean out my closet of clothes I’ll probably never wear again and give those away. If I ever am able to wear those sizes again it will give me incentive to save money as I lose weight to buy new clothes.

We have a Christmas tree we’ll probably not use again in the attic that I could give away to someone less picky about trees (we bought it secondhand, and it was on its last leg the second-to-last time we used it), and I need to go through our ornaments this Christmas and get rid of some. I mean, I LOVE that we have a choice between so many each year, but would rather use all of the ones that mean something to us and then some basic ones besides, rather than having two boxes of ornaments that we don’t use every Christmas after the tree is decorated. We have luggage in the attic we don’t need/use (even when we moved transcontinentally we didn’t use it), and some that TSA broke or we got secondhand and no longer use.

We are super minimalist with Eriana’s stuff (still going strong with the new toy in, old toy out exchange), but have lots of crap of our own. I’d like to purge the stuff we don’t have a need for and organize the stuff we will/do use so it’s EASIER to use. I’m just sick of it all. I have 12 days until school starts again to get done as much as possible. We’ll see how much I can get done between now and then. :)

Since this has been a boring post about household stuff, I’ll leave you with a couple of shots of our silly monster. Her newest silly thing is making this face and saying “cheese” when you ask her to smile for a picture. Silly, silly girl.

I’ve been trying to get rid of stuff lately, too. I’d had this flash of “Wow, if I died there would be a TON of crap for someone to sift through…”

This sounds like our house too. We rented a storage unit 2 years ago when Chris and I got married to move his furniture into so we could combined households. At the time, we didn’t want to sell any of the furniture because we were planning to get a new house about a year later. Little did we know about the bundle of joy that would be heading our way a few months later so the new house it out for the foreseeable future. So now it’s time to part ways with all the excess stuff and get rid of the storage unit that costs a small fortune.

Not boring. I loooove reading about organization. I now want to go home immediately and get rid of lots of stuff.

(This was written while I was at work, btw, I just couldn’t post it until I got home.)
